Imvelo is the isiZulu word for nature. It is also the reason this studio exists.
Imvelo Graphite is a small South African studio with one goal: to capture Africa's wildlife with the depth and quiet drama of a fine pencil drawing, and to give every animal back its own name.
How each piece is made
Every artwork starts with a carefully chosen wildlife photograph. It is developed digitally into a hyperrealistic graphite-style drawing, and then the real work begins: each piece goes through extensive human editing. Composition, crop, tone and contrast are reworked by hand, and the details that bring an animal to life (the eyes, the whiskers, the fur, the light) are refined again and again until it looks and feels like pencil on paper. Many drafts never make it: only the best pieces are selected, named and test-printed before they join the collection. Each design carries the Imvelo Graphite mark and is printed to order on archival fine-art paper.
Why African names?
A lion is Ingonyama in isiZulu, Tau in Setswana, Shumba in Shona and Simba in Swahili. These names carry meaning, history and pride. Every print carries its African name and the story behind it, so the art on your wall speaks the language of the land it comes from.
